Five Simple Ways a Writer Can Improve His Impact

Five Simple Ways a Writer Can Improve His Impact

writing

Writing is easy.
It’s something many people forget because freelance writing can be a self-defeating endeavor even for those with strong academic skills. It isn’t like completing a math problem where everything has a logical place and you’re guaranteed to do fine so long as the dots are properly connected.
Writing is the brooding cousin of painting. Whereas painters use brush strokes to convey an image, writers craft visions with words. The picture is framed by words designed to influence the reader’s perception of whatever is being conveyed. Word choice and flow are important in capturing and maintaining the reader’s interest.
In the course of more than a decade as a full-time writer – mostly for U.S. metropolitan daily newspapers – I have learned from extremely talented wordsmiths who passed on practical advice.
Their tips will help fine-tune your writing for maximum clarity and effect:
• Keep it simple, stupid! This design principle dictates use of sentences that are focused and clear. Any writer is more likely to get into trouble using long sentences with complex punctuation. Clunky sentences should be divided up so they are easier to read. Writing this way helps build and maintain momentum.
• What’s in it for me? It’s an old sales adage, but it applies equally well in writing. By the third or fourth paragraph at the latest, the writer must answer this question for the reader or risk losing their attention. In general, people want to be led and the writer must be firm in explaining why the article has value. This “nut graph” spells out, in one or two sentences, why the article is important and relevant to the reader.

• Word echoes are redundant. This one can be tricky, especially for those writing Search Engine Optimized content that relies on repetitive use of keywords. But even SEO has a limit. Generally speaking, an echo is when a writer uses the same word more than once in a sentence, or even paragraph. Repetitive use of words –except for search engine optimization – is boring and distracting. Avoid doing this at all costs.
• That “that” has got to go. In many cases, use of “that” is unnecessary and should be avoided. It may seem trivial, but “that” acts in a similar fashion as “umm” – overuse detracts from the author’s message. For example: “I hope that we go to the baseball game” should instead read, “I hope we go to the baseball game.”
• Read it out loud. Even after writing, editing and conducting a spelling and grammar check, it’s still not time to hit the send button. Read it out loud. This simple act is a perfect way to catch – with fresh ears – errors that may have been missed by fatigued mind and eyes. Reading every sentence out loud also helps identify awkward word arrangements that may slow the reader and cause them to veer off-course.

How to Use UPWork to Hire Freelancers for Your Online Tasks

How to Use UPWork to Hire Freelancers for Your Online Tasks

Several years back, making money online or finding someone to complete some online work inexpensively was a pipe dream. However, with the advent of an online era, these demands are very easily met, and the opportunities are wide and varied.
Obviously, when searching for a freelancer, we need to focus carefully on hiring the right person for the job we seek to fill.  The key, of course, is to hire someone recommended by a trusted and reliable source who complete the work effectively and efficiently.
Hire Freelancer on Odesk
One such resource is UPWork (formerly oDesk), one of the largest online job portals, where one can find freelancers such as graphic designers, project managers and software developers.  Whether you have a short-term task or a long-term job, UPWork will help you find it at a reasonable price. You can even hire a team of people online if you have the right management skills.

How to get started with

UPWork and hire a freelancer:

UPWork allows you to either hire a freelancer to get a job done, or you can register yourself as a freelancer and make money by producing work for other people’s projects.
To begin, consider reading this awesome guide by Srikanth, in which he describes how a virtual assistant works.
In today’s UPWork tutorial, I will explain how you can get started with UPWork, with the goal of hiring someone to produce some work for you.
Here at ShoutMeLoud, we have used UPWork to locate freelancers for tasks such as the following:
  • Creating slideshare slides
  • Creating transcripts of YouTube videos
  • Creating blog posts from YouTube videos
  • Finding niche writers
These are just a few examples of the many tasks for which you can hire a good freelancer.
Let’s get started with this guide for entrepreneurs and bloggers, illustrating how to use UPWork to hire freelancers:
  1. Create your free account on UPWork: This is a simple step of filling in some basic details, and getting started with UPWork.
Create oDesk Account
  1. After signing up, add the details for your profile, and verify your payment methods. To date, I have had no payment issues or payment disputes when working with UPWork/oDesk.
  2. Create your job profile: This is where you offer a description of the job you are seeking to fill.  Begin with a detailed description of the job, the time-frame in which you need to have it completed, and the skills, educational background, and abilities you seek from the person whom you will employ to complete the job at hand.
Once you have listed your job description, weeding out the right person from a huge list of applicants is a daunting and rigorous task in itself. You do not want to select someone who does not fit your profile or is not a quality (or genuine!) job- seeker.

Tips for using UPWork to choose the right freelancer for your task:

  1. Assess the resume of the potential employee thoroughly before hiring. Make sure he or she is a good fit for the job description you have laid out. Thoroughly research his or her past work and freelance work history if possible. Do not hire anyone with no previous experience.
  1. Look for positive reviews from previous clients. UPWork has a review feature which allows potential employers to read reviews of the clients who have employed a particular freelancer in the past. Look for red flags here as well. For example, UPWork has an option of hiding reviews or testimonials. However, these are reflected in the freelancers’ profile as hidden reviews. These are people whom you don’t want to hire, as the lack of transparency is a clear concern.Hire on odesk
  1. Once you are satisfied with the freelancer’s credentials and work history, arrange a Skype call. For smaller, less expensive jobs, you might also choose to communicate with the potential employee/freelancer via email or chat. Skype offers you the opportunity to meet with someone face-to-face, however, and that can offer a more revealing interview experience. However you choose to interview your potential freelancer, ask about his or her past experiences, and evaluate his/her communication and interpersonal skills.
  1. You can shortlist 2-3 people based on your communications, and then assign them a short task which will allow you to evaluate their work. This will help you to accurately assess their ability to complete your task or job.
  1. After recruiting the right person, communication is an important aspect of maintaining a steady workflow. Ensure there is consistent two-way communication. Provide short deliverables, offer feedback, and provide corrections if necessary. However, make sure that he/she does the majority of the task, as that is what you are paying for.
  1. Keep track of the ongoing work through an UPWork work diary. This feature offers you a screenshot of the ongoing work as well as the work that has been completed to date, and also keeps track of the time invested in doing a particular task or job. Hourly details can also be checked through UPWork’s time tracker software.
  1. You can also get support from UPWork’s customer care if you are not able to find the right person. They can help you to select the profile you are searching for, if you find yourself in need of assistance.
How to pay your freelancers after the work is completed:odesk payment
Payments can be made through credit card, PayPal or a bank account. You can pay your freelancer on an hourly basis or upon the completion of the project. UPWork charges 10% of each payment made.  So, for instance, if you pay $ 10/hr for the work, UPWork will charge you $1, and the remaining $9 will be transferred to the employee. It is your responsibility to negotiate a payment schedule with your employee. My suggestion is that you never pay 100% of the billing amount upfront. Instead, pay according to the tasks completed.
Payment in odesk
UPWork also manages all billing hours, allowing you to remain free of all the hassles of paper work and invoices. However, I highly recommend that you also maintain a financial work sheet rather than simply relying on UPWork’s customer support.
Rather than keeping an in-house team, it is a great alternative to locate great talent online, as there are plenty of quality fish in the market. Just be sure to hire a quality worker.
It is also good to get into the practice of designating some of your workload to people who can do it better than you can. This will save you time and energy which you can then invest in the things that you do best.
So far my experience with UPWork has been excellent, and I would recommend UPWork or any other similar freelancing site to assist you in creating a virtual team for your work projects.
Please feel free to use the comments section below to share your experience with UPWork/oDesk or any other similar site that you use.
If you find the information in this post useful, please share it with your friends and colleagues on Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus.

oDesk Profile Overview Sample

True, your oDesk profile overview is one of the first impressions you’ll make with prospective clients. But do you really need to load it up with a ton of keywords and fluffy language? How much does the overview statement impact your position in oDesk’s search results?

How to Write an Overview that Appeals to Prospective Clients

While I can’t speak to oDesk’s search algorithm, I can offer the following advice (having billed over 4,000 hours on oDesk):
  • Write an Elevator Pitch – Your oDesk profile overview is really just your “elevator pitch” for why a client should hire you. If you were in an elevator with someone, how would you describe your skills and the value you bring to the table? Get to the point quickly and focus on client value.
  • Don’t Be All Things to All People – I usually avoid hiring contractors who say they are skilled in a bunch of seemingly unrelated areas. For example, I see this all the time: “In the past, I have used Joomla, Quickbooks, Hootsuite, and I am also skilled in the areas of customer service and sales.” You can’t be good at everything, so don’t overdue it.
  • Carve Out a Niche – Your oDesk profile overview is a great oppotuniay to begin carving out a niche and establish your credibility. For example, if most of your clients are tech companies, why not state it in your overview? Again, you can’t be an expert at everything and every niche.
  • Less is Probably More – Most people are going to glance at your overview and look for glaring issues. If you pack your overview with too much information, you may actually reduce the likelihood that someone will contact you. Save a little magic for the interview.
  • Cluttered = Blah – Poorly constructed sentences, random links, and general clutter can create doubt in the minds of prospects. Clean and simple is better than crowded and crazy.

Here’s What My Profile Looks Like

For what it’s worth, here’s a screenshot of my profile. I hope you find it helpful in your pursuit of an oDesk profile overview sample:

How to get first job on oDesk
How to get first job on oDesk

How to get first job on oDesk from Bangladesh

How to get first job on oDesk – this is a Million Dollar question. There is no absolute answer of this question. But it should have a effective and tricky answer. It happens when a Client may depend on a new contractor. What are the reasons for picking a newbie without experience and feedback? What is the point of view of that Client? We have to find the key reason and get the answer form the Client’s side. Let’s research and make some points.
    • At first, any Client want their project to be completed successfully by the deadline.
    • Secondly they prefer cost effectiveness. They try to make their project cheaper.
So, a contractor should be capable of doing a job successfully, fast and cheaply. But how a new contractor prove him/herself that he/she can do this perfectly? What would be the way of applying for a job?
There is a lot of quality contractors available on oDesk. Most of them are experienced and they are keeping good feedback. But few of them are keeping their Hourly or Fixed Price Rate low.
We think, we got the point. The key reason is Hourly or Fixed Price Rate. It should be low as much as possible. And after getting your first job you can increase it according to your feedback score. One more thing to be counted is writing a good Cover Letter.

How to write a killer Cover Letter?

Cover Letter is a very important part of your job application. You should know how to write a effective Cover Letter to attract the Client. Here are some tips:
    • Cover Letter should be well written without any grammatical mistake.
    • Describe your all expertise clearly. There should be no false statement.
    • Don’t use template. Write different Cover Letter for different jobs.
    • Perfectly answer the all questions from job description. Don’t try to be over smart. Be polite.
    • Never beg for a job. Just try to convince the Client that you are the best fit.
    • Write your availability on net and how many hours you can work in a week.
    • Using Skype is a huge plus. If you can speak normally (not good enough) in English write down your Skype ID on Cover Letter.
    • Finally you may add your profile URL link if you have any previous work (outside of oDesk) example on your portfolio.
So, we may come to the conclusion that offering a low Hourly or Fixed Price rate with a killer Cover Letter enhances the true chance to get the job. That’s all. Now you know how to get first job on oDesk.
